The first Act of Shakespeare's King Lear contains a plot, a subplot, and a character study.
The plot shows the mad act of King Lear to divide his kingdom and his household, an act of such irresponsibility by a father that it must ultimately end in civil war.
The subplot shows the machinations of the bastard Edmund against his brother Edgar to use nature as a ladder to ascend the social ladder. His evil succeeds because of his father's blindness, and it ends with his father being deprived of his sight.
The character study is the figure of the wise fool, a figure meant to check and comfort the king, which cannot live in such an upside-down kingdom. The fool is a foil for Cordelia herself.
