Kaffe Fassett’s Quilts in America
16 March – 3 November 2019
We are delighted to welcome back Kaffe Fassett to the American Museum for our 2019 special exhibition. As part of our special exhibition programme, we will be showcasing 20 brand new quilts designed by Kaffe. These stunning new artworks have been inspired by the Museum’s world-renowned collection of antique American quilts. The exhibition at the American Museum will provide a unique opportunity to see the old and the new alongside one another.
Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and their design team have worked closely with chief curator Kate Hebert to select appropriate quilts from the Museum’s collection. These treasures were then reimagined and recreated using fabrics designed by the team. The resulting creations showcase Kaffe’s flair for, and use of, vivid colour combinations.
Accompanying the exhibition is Kaffe’s latest publication Kaffe Fassett’s Quilts in America (published August 2018). Kaffe has had a long association with the American Museum, which has held a number of exhibitions of his work. It is fitting that to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his successful series of patchwork and quilting books, Kaffe should choose the quilt collection at the Museum as the inspiration for his latest publication.
Exhibition includes:
20 new Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably designed quilts.
18 historic quilts from the collection of the American Museum.
