Semuc Champey is a true 'hidden gem' of Guatemala! Buried pretty deep in the jungle, it takes a while to get to this monument and as a result, many travellers choose to skip it. So what should you do? Is it worth the long bus ride? How much time do you need there? Let's dive into it all!

If you are travelling through Guatemala, a visit to Semuc Champey is definitely worth adding to your itinerary, provided you have time. We spent approximately 3 weeks in Guatemala and were SO glad we added this to our plans. We started our Guatemala trip in Antigua ([ Ссылка ]), then visited Lake Atitlan ([ Ссылка ]) before travelling around 10 hours to get to Semuc Champey.

Semuc Champey is a nature preserve in Guatemala that is approximately 45 minutes from the nearest town of Lanquín. The monument consists of a natural 300m limestone bridge with a series of tiered turquoise pools. Below the bridge flows the powerful Cahabón River. Many travellers visit this area with the intention of seeing this natural phenomenon and swimming in the pools. Additionally, cave tours and river floats are also very popular here!

The great news... You don't need long to see Semuc Champey! We found two days to be the perfect amount of time. If you have more time you could stretch it to three days for a little more time to relax and explore the area. Alternatively, you can absolutely see all the highlights in one action-packed day if that is all you have time for (although I do think two days is a much better option).

Finally, deciding where to stay will impact your time here. You can choose to stay right by Semuc Champey (10m walk), or in the town of Lanquin (45m 4x4 ride). We stayed right near the park and found we had SO much more freedom to explore at our own pace, choose the cave tour we wanted and not end up exploring with large groups of people.
