Hepatitis D, also known as HDV (Hepatitis D Virus) is unusual because it occurs only in people who already have hepatitis B (HBV). Hepatitis D cases are rare in the United States.
Hepatitis D doesn’t always cause symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they often include:
* abdominal pain and tenderness
* yellowing of the skin and eyes, which is called jaundice
* joint pain and soreness
* vomiting
* unexplained loss of appetite
* darker than normal urine
* fatigue. frequently feeling tired
The symptoms of hepatitis B and hepatitis D resemble each other, so distinguishing between them can be challenging and tests are needed. In some cases, hepatitis D can make the symptoms of hepatitis B worse.
Those who are most at risk for becoming infected with hepatitis D include
* anyone who already has hepatitis B
* anyone who often receives blood transfusions
* those who abuse injectable or intravenous (IV) drugs
