An overnight strike on Kyiv killed two adults and a child on Thursday, June 1, amid complaints that an air-raid shelter in the city had been locked, reports said.
Reports said a nine-year-old girl was among those killed, as well as a 33-year-old woman, whose husband spoke to reporters on Thursday.
“At night, you usually have to knock [on the shelter’s door] for 5-10 minutes before they let you in. This time we didn’t make it inside,” the man told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). “There were about five women standing outside the shelter, others were coming. But it was closed. I came here, too. My children and wife were here. That’s her lying over there because the door was closed.”
“Your wife?” the RFE/RL reporter asks.
“Yes,” the man responds. “I was asked to walk around the building and tried to wake [the guard], but after I left there was an explosion and debris fell from the sky. I realized I had to run back. I saw lots of blood, women, and children.”
Kyiv residents have complained to Mayor Vitali Klitschko that the air-raid shelter was locked. On Telegram, the mayor said access to shelters would be checked by the district heads, but said that the shelter had been open at the time of the attack.
Klitschko said at least 14 others sustained injuries during the overnight attack.
