One of my favorite people to spend time with, Fabio of La Fornace is truly a hidden gem. One of the most brilliant minds in the industry, talking with Fabio as much as possible helped my wine knowledge sky rocket. Not to mention, his wines are spectacular as his wine making skills are mesmerizing
The DOCG zone of Montalcino is gorgeous as it overlooks my favorite place in the world, Val d’Orcia, and is well known for some of the worlds most sought after wines
Montalcino is often known to produce the highest quality expression of Sangiovese, Italy’s most cultivated grape. The zone isn’t very large in overall size, but is home to a largely diverse scale of microclimates. As most of Tuscany, the climate is
Mediterranean, hosting hot and dry summers with little rainfall, yet the area feels a cooling effect of coastal influence from the Tyrrhenian Sea to
the West, and a diurnal range of temperatures from day to night with the Apennine mountains to the east. Thanks to the hilly landscape, Vines find full exposure to the sun, on slopes ranging from 150-500m.
One of the most important effects of all though, is Monte Amiata to the South. This inactive Volcano collects the summer storms from the south,
protecting vines from destruction. The hot climate, tempered by the sea and Apennines, altitude of slopes, and protection by Amiata, combines for one of the longest growing seasons of Tuscany. This does nothing but help produce one of Italy’s most powerful and age worthy
wines.
Brunello has an aging requirement of 5 years before release, with a minimum of 2 years in oak. La Fornace matures their Brunello for 36 months in oak
