Public Art Mosaics, Creating The Spirit of Discovery

This video showcases a large-scale public art project commissioned by the City of Rockville, MD. It takes viewers through the various stages of the project, from design to fabrication to installation. The video was originally produced by Bonnie Fitzgerald shortly after the completion of Spirit of Discovery in 2011.
The Spirit of Discovery public art initiative was born out of a nationwide Call for Entries, commemorating Rockville, Maryland's 150th anniversary. Design and fabrication by Maverick Mosaics artist team of Bonnie Fitzgerald and Ali Mirsky.
The installation consists of two separate works of art that relate to each other: a sprawling 170-square-foot multi-layered mosaic of a spinning nebula alongside an imposing 8-foot sculpture of a young girl gazing at the nebula through a telescope. Both works are dimensional, and their surfaces are adorned in glass mosaic.
The site-specific earned recognition, being selected for the prestigious Mosaics Arts International Exhibition in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2012. The exhibition was a part of the Society of American Mosaic Artist annual conference.
Both artists have spent the years since teaming up on Spirit of Discovery creating other large-scale artworks and developing their own studio practices. Fitzgerald founded the Make it Mosaics YouTube channel and Make it Mosaic Online.
In 2024, Mirsky, alongside partner C.G. Duffy, embarked on a new endeavor, founding Empart in Baltimore, MD. This nonprofit organization emerged from a shared dedication to art, people, and the transformative power of empathy.
