Lord Richard MacLeod talks about the history of Arabic calligraphy. The relationship between the Quran and Arabic calligraphy and the influence of Islam, the diversity and the culture on the development of Arabic calligraphy.
Recording the heritage wasn't something that Arabs would do. Their heritage was preserved orally. Islam changed that. The commandment of Allah and the need to preserve and transport the Quran created the need to write.
In this talk, Lord MacLeod demonstrate that relationship in the first three centuries of Islam.
Lord MacLeod explain why and when the dots and the short vowels were added. He also explains how the diversity of cultures contributed to the diversity of Arabic calligraphy.
