About the song:
Most of the instruments I used are from Sonic 3, I had a feeling I would find something good there, Sonic 3 seems to have a lot of harsh synths and Sonic instruments in general are really good for most covers apparently. I also used some instruments from Alien Soldier, that's also a really good game for harsh and weird synths, and it was great for this. I added some stereo at the end to make it a bit more dynamic, if it's all centered it all feels a bit noisy sometimes, and some stereo can change things up a bit.
You might notice there are parts where the video suddenly goes really fast, and that it always happens when there's fast kicks. Well, I had to do it that way because of some strange behavior in DefleMask. Whenever I need to do really fast notes in between notes and there's no space between them, I use the retrigger effect (effect 0C) and give it a value that sounds alright. I did that initially, but for some reason it worked on some parts but not on others, the added kicks got displaced on later parts despite being exactly the same, so I had to do something to avoid that. My first idea was to just give them different values each time, but it was completely inconsistent and it would probably get displaced again after each loop, so instead I did a pattern break and basically zoomed in. The thing is, the shortest amount of time a note can be produced is a 60th of a second, that's what the numbers in the clock speed represent (the ones that say 06/05 and 05/05 in this), I call those "spaces". So, I knew the amount of spaces in between each kick, so I expanded it 1:1, so each row would be just 1 space long, and placed the kicks exactly where I wanted them to be, and then I zoomed out back to the normal speed. I hope that's clear.
About the picture:
Alien Soldier has some amazing sprite art, doesn't it? The entirety of the background sprites are from it, the floor is from Ristar, and the enemies are hand drawn by me. The Phantom Ruby is from Sonic Mania, but with a Genesis-compatible color palette. The background's color palette is different from the original, it used to be just regular metallic blue and some shades of green, but here it's all red and orange to make it look like the reactor is overheating and about to blow up, I think it feels more like a reactor that way, instead of the blue shades that the one in Forces has. I didn't draw the laser cannons because I couldn't decide what angle they should be looking at, and the video quality made it a little difficult to see what shape they had.
Fun fact, I had spent about 3 hours drawing the capsules that contained the Phantom Rubies, took a little break after finishing them, and when I came back there was nothing on my screen, the monitor was on but only showed a black screen. I had no other option but to turn the PC off and lose all my progress. I could still remember details of what I had done, so I tried recreating it from memory. Now, this might be a weird flex, but I got almost the entire thing back, I remembered all its details down to the damn dithering. Sometimes I'd remember myself messing around with some shapes, and since it's all so small, the only way I could mess with that shape would be if it had a specific size, and so I'd find that size again and remember what it looked like before. I didn't manage to get it back 100% exactly the same, but it was so well restored that I could continue from it like it was the original sprite, I was honestly impressed. I hope it never happens to me again though.
