The roach fishing on the lower River Calder around Altofts and Methley can be exceptional during the autumn months, recent match results indicated the river was in form and I was really looking forward to match fishing the river again after 3 years away.
I'd previously fished all of the sections in practice on numerous occasions in 2017 and 2018 and enjoyed a 2nd place individual and a Team 1st in the WICAC champs and an individual win when our club visited the following year.
I had a good idea of where I wanted to draw on Altofts Ings and the tactics I would employ with the bias being towards a groundbait and whip approach as most of the pegs will see you with 10ft of water off the end of 7 or 8m of whip - perfect for roach at this time of year.
We all know what happens to best laid plans!!!
I draw on the the Mexborough Estates Length at Methley, below the weir and am faced with just 3ft of water at the deepest point in my swim - this would require a serious strategy rethink!
In this live match fishing vlog, I explain all of the challenges the swim throws up and take you through my approach, decisions and reasoning throughout the course of the day. Hopefully you'll pick up a few match fishing tips.
