Craig Hester here with R2Awatches.com. Today we will be talking about the SSN-571 watch from Vostok Europe. This watch grew out of a partnership between R2Awatches.com and the SSN-571 alumni association, and is named for the world's first nuclear submarine.
Let's start off by talking about the SSN-571 submarine itself. In addition to it being the first nuclear submarine, it was the first submarine to ever, while submerged, go from the Pacific to the Atlantic under the North Pole, which was a total of 1,599 nautical miles.
For those of you familiar with past Vostok Europe watches, it's helpful to keep in mind that this watch is on par with our more expensive models such as the Energia, or the Lunokhod. You'll see that it has stand-up tritium tube technology, which means constant illumination, unlike super luminova, which shines for awhile, and then fades.
It's 46 mm, and it does have the K1 mineral system, also known as gorilla glass. If you're looking at the mohs hardness scale, the K1 is right in the middle, between sapphire and mineral. Sapphire is a nine, mineral is a five, and K1 is a seven, so you get the best of both worlds with the crystal on this watch.
There are two movements being offered in the SSN-571. The first is the NH35, and the second is the VK61 Mecca Quartz chronograph.
