Hazelnuts are supposed to ripen around the same time as Chokecherries. As my chokecherries are ripe I headed to Julia Davis Park in Boise to collect some Turkish Hazelnuts. Turkish Hazelnut is a good species to use as root stock, due to its hardiness.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a cross pollinator in range for the park specimens.
