Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated soldiers of World War II, showed unparalleled bravery during a German attack in France, January 1945. When his unit was outnumbered, he ordered his men to retreat while he stayed behind, single-handedly holding off the enemy.
Murphy climbed onto a burning tank destroyer, using its mounted machine gun to fire at waves of German soldiers. Despite being wounded and surrounded, he fought for over an hour, killing or wounding 50 enemy soldiers. Once reinforcements arrived, he refused to leave until his men were safe.
