Target monsters of Master Rank quests, Follower quests and Anomaly quests have a 6% chance of small crown monsters and a 10% chance of large crown monsters appearing.
(High Rank targets have a 3% chance for small and large crowns each)
Anomaly Investigations will always have monsters at their 100% size, no crowns to be found here.
You don’t have to finish a quest after you either caught or slayed a monster. Just choose "return from quest" (don’t abandon, you will lose your progress this way!)
While certain quests have a 100% chance of giving a crown, the size in these quests is often not the largest or smallest regular size possible which is why I decided to search for these specific sizes in regular quests. I really wanted to show the difference of the smallest and largest size in this video.
Also I’m not the biggest fan of trying to take exact measurements. Uneven terrain, different camera angles, small monsters interfering, difficulty of standing exactly at the same spot next to the monster etc. can lead to wrong assumptions and to the decision to not hunt a monster that actually was crown-sized.
I believe it is more important to get a feeling for the size of the monster so you can rule out most of them with an educated guess and hunt everything else that seems close enough.
Just remember to have fun with the game and that the Desire Sensor is not your enemy, it just wants you to train some more on this specific monster. And if it gets too boring: try new builds, learn a new weapon, hunt some other things or just quit for the day but don’t force yourself please.
Crown hunting is a marathon and not a sprint and you will get there eventually

I decided to go for shock traps because they are easy to use. Monsters that are immune to them got the puppet spider treatment and for the players who don’t like this approach there is an alternative by using para ammo in the video.
I used external datamined information to get this video done so it would be pretentious of me now to tell you to not use such tools yourself but I want to mention that I got the crown achievements twice legitimately before I even began working on this video (first time on switch).
If I can do it, you can too. I believe in you.
Last but not least a general reminder (and a note to myself): Please remember to make backups every now and then when working on large projects, loosing almost all of your recordings a few weeks into it isn't fun... 🥲
I hope that this video can help you just a little bit with these time-consuming crown achievements. Thank you for watching and good luck :D
