The show follows the lives of two brothers, Charlie and Alan Harper, along with Alan’s young son, Jake. Charlie, a wealthy and carefree bachelor, writes commercial jingles and indulges in a lavish lifestyle at his Malibu beach house. When Alan’s marriage ends in divorce, he moves in with Charlie, bringing Jake over for weekend stays. The household dynamic shifts with the addition of Berta (Conchata Ferrell), Charlie’s witty and no-nonsense housekeeper, who reluctantly adjusts to the changes. Another key character, Rose (Melanie Lynskey), is introduced in the first episode as a quirky woman with an obsessive crush on Charlie after a brief fling.
