While virtual hard disks can have space dynamically allocated, meaning the vdi file increases in size as the virtual hard disk fills up with data, the vdi does not reduce in size when files are deleted from the virtual hard disk on its own. This process allows you to reclaim the disk space no longer in use by the virtual machine
