Online recording a hybrid meeting hosted by Ignacio Marti Perez, EERA JP Wind Coordinator, Jake Badger, manager of SP 3, and Tuhfe Göçmen, manager of SP 5, at DTU Wind and Energy Systems, Thursday 24 August.
The European Energy Research Alliance Joint Program for Wind Energy (EERA JP Wind) has started a project to develop a research program for wind energy spanning up to 2050. This initiative aims at providing clarity about the research needed to achieve the targets included in the IEA Net Zero by 2050 and RePower EU strategy.
The ambitious targets for wind energy that have been adopted by the EU and many other countries worldwide, require addressing barriers and knowledge gaps that could prevent achieving the deployment of wind energy on time. Despite the fact that wind technology is mature and performs today, new research is still needed to take wind technology to the level required to decarbonize completely our activities in the next 30 years. The challenges ahead are comparable to the ones wind energy has faced during the last 30 years, now moving into massive manufacturing and deployment, sustainability, social and environmental compatibility, materials and workforce availability, among many others. On the other hand, the energy system is evolving quickly bringing new requirements to wind energy technology. Targeted research, building on the knowledge base that has been created for wind energy technology, will be crucial to develop science-based solutions that will enable wind energy to be the core of the new energy system.
NeWindEERA project is working on translating the long-term targets that have been defined for 2050, into research needs for wind energy. The research program NeWindEERA is building, is based on the collective knowledge that EERA JP Wind members have. DTU Wind and Energy Systems is taking a leading role in this initiative and everyone within the department is invited to participate in this process.
