Occupational therapists help people overcome the effects of disability due to illness, accident or ageing so that they can carry out everyday tasks or occupations that are important to them. ‘Occupations’ include daily tasks such as self-care, work or leisure. Occupational therapists are skilled professionals, who take into account people’s physical, psychological, social and environmental needs in order increase their independence and quality of life by finding solutions to everyday problems. Occupational therapists work with children and adults of all ages with a wide range of conditions including mental illness, physical or learning disabilities. They work in a variety of settings including hospitals, community, schools, re-employment schemes, voluntary organisations and in independent practice (College of Occupational Therapists, 2014).
