Kenyan public university lecturers took to the streets today to put pressure on the Ministry of Education to fastback the negotiation process for a 2013-2017 collective bargaining agreement. The negotiations stalled after university dons rejected a 10 billion shilling offer from the Government last week. The dons insist the Sh10 billion pay offer only translates to a 3% basic pay increase against a 30% basic pay hike they have been agitating for since January 18th. The lecturers accused the Inter-Public Universities Council consultative forum of doing little to end the stalemate. The strike has seen 33 public universities affected with more than 500,000 students missing classes this semester.
