Erwin Rommel, known as The Desert Fox after his African successes, was one of the most famous Nazi warlords. German propaganda portrayed him as the perfect man who bravely commanded his army always at its head (which was true), much less did the Germans boast of Rommel's unusual popularity with the Allies. For Rommel was no inveterate Nazi, he did not murder Jews, he treated captured enemies according to the Geneva Conventions, and he was eventually spoken of with respect by his enemies on the battlefield, the British commander Bernard Montgomery and the American general George Patton.
