As a tribute to the late Luciano Sandrone, our Wine Director, David Allen MW, tastes a bottle of 2017 vintage Aleste Barolo, a wine made from the Cannubi Boschis vineyard at the heart of the Barolo region.
The Sandrone estate was founded in 1978, a year after after Luciano Sandrone had bought a small parcel of the Cannubi Boschis vineyard. The first vintages were made in the garage of his parents' house. During a trip to Vinitaly in 1982 a US distributor offered to take all of Luciano's 1978 Barolo, an act that was the starting point for a long, slow period of growth as additional Cannubi Boschis plots and other vineyards were purchased.
The wine portfolio focuses on indigenous grape varieties of the region including Dolcetto and Barbera. In the winery, all fermentations are spontaneous through the use of indigenous yeasts. Grapes are vinified separately by variety as well as by individual plot to allow for more control in the blending process.
