In June 2021, Pretoria News, a publication under Independent Media, released a story regarding the birth of ten babies to one mother, and who became known as the Tembisa 10. This story, initially welcomed, was quickly decried as fake news and Independent Media was lambasted across the globe for failure to conduct the necessary checks and balances.
Following months of speculation and subsequent investigations, Iqbal Survé, the head of Independent Media, called a press conference to present an overview of the findings by the team he tasked with the probe, which included veteran anti-apartheid lawyer and Advocate Michael Donen and obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Mpho Pooe.
Survé claimed that the MEC of Health in Gauteng was at Tembisa Hospital the day after the mother allegedly gave birth and ordered that she be incarcerated at a psychiatric institution for a year or two, hoping that the mother would commit suicide or be very depressed by what was happening to her.
