Bodycam Footage Of Police Catching Man Stealing Artifacts - On July 6, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., two officers were conducting water patrol in the area of Little Lake George. During the patrol, a camouflage canoe was observed at a documented archeological site located at Beecher Point, identified as Site ID PU01376. The site is known to be a prehistoric shell midden containing lithic artifacts from the archaic era.
A white male was observed in the water near the site. Upon approach, the individual appeared to be disturbing the site while seated in the water and digging. Upon noticing the marked patrol vessel, the individual stood and moved toward the canoe.
Contact was made, and the officers identified themselves, their agency, and the reason for the encounter. During the interaction, several items were seen in the canoe, which were recognized as tools commonly used for locating and excavating artifacts based on training and experience.
When asked if there were any artifacts in possession, the individual initially denied having any. However, as the person turned out a shorts pocket, an object resembling an arrowhead fell into the water beside them. One of the officers entered the water and recovered additional items possibly left behind, including a weight belt, a mesh bag, and a three-pronged digging tool. A subsequent search of the canoe revealed several lithic stone artifacts, as well as two marijuana joints found within a cigarette pack.
Nearby condominium residents reported that the individual had been seen digging at the site over several days, allegedly removing items such as arrowheads and placing them on a bulkhead. The person admitted to digging at the site and stated that arrowheads had been found there in the past. They claimed to be searching for fossils and shark teeth and provided a fossil permit.
The recovered items, including the weight belt, excavation tool, mesh bag, lithic artifacts, and marijuana, were seized as evidence. The individual was cited for removing artifacts, possession of marijuana, and two boating safety violations. The seized items were submitted to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office as evidence, and photographs were taken to document them.
