The nation paused for a two-minute silence at 11am to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and remember those who fought and lost their lives in the Second World War.
It came after the RAF Red Arrows took to the skies to perform a spectacular fly past, flying over Westminster at 10.10am after taking off from RAF Scampton at 9.37am and travelling down the east coast of England, before heading to London.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier paid tribute to the "heroism of countless ordinary people" as the UK comes together to remember those who fought and died in the Second World War.
Events across the UK include a two-minute silence, a toast to the heroes of World War Two at 3pm on doorsteps across the nation and an address by the Queen at 9pm. Boris Johnson has also written to veterans to assure them that despite the lockdown, they and their efforts to defeat a “ruthless enemy” would not be forgotten.
