Have you ever wondered why rum was the drink of choice for pirates?

One reason why pirates enjoyed rum, was because it had a greater shelf life than a beer of a wine does, but there are other reasons as well. Fresh water was difficult to keep clean during long voyages at sea, because water was stored in barrels and it quickly became stagnant and undrinkable. Adding some rum to the water made it safer to drink for a longer period of time. Rum was also easily available, because many of the ships that pirates attacked were filled with it.
