Sky News host Nicholas Reece says the Catholic Church in America is “wrapped up in the political culture wars” and would be “better off” if it stopped denying President Joe Biden Holy Communion for supporting abortion.

“In my view, the American Catholic Church has allowed itself to be wrapped up in the political culture wars in which the Republican Party has weaponized the debate about abortion,” he said.

“The Catholic Church is not about to shame Mr Biden into reversing his stance. And in my view, they should no longer deny him communion or anyone else who supports abortion.

“For its own good, the American Catholic Church would be better off if the bishops stopped trying to use the Eucharist as a punishment, and frankly, kept church and politics as far apart as possible.”

However, Sky News host Rita Panahi said the Catholic Church was entitled to denying a sacred rite to those whose values were in direct contradiction to its beliefs.
