Welcome to the Seeing Art History classroom’s discussion of the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.
This video examines Leonardo da Vinci’s c. 1472-1480 The Annunciation. In this work, Leonardo united his scientific interest in the natural world and the sacred purpose of his painting. Situating the annunciation outdoors, Leonardo’s visual naturalism employs the mechanics of pictorial space to compositionally connect the Angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. Leonardo visualizes the annunciation as moment in which the invisible God enters the physical world.
Written and narrated by Dr. James Romaine.
