After a season-long battle with rivals Enfield, Yeovil won the ICIS-sponsored Isthmian League with 101 points in 1997. On the last day of the season, they beat relegated Chertsey Town 4-0 at Huish Park, with goals from Forinton (2), Turner and goalkeeper Tony Pennock who took a penalty for a foul on Dean Birkby. Star of the team was striker Howard Forinton, who scored 23 goals in 25 games and was sold along with Jerry Gill at the end of the season to Birmingham City, where his career would be blighted by injuries. Former Spurs midfielder Graham Roberts managed the team and would lead them to a mid-table finish in the Conference in 1997-98, although he was sacked before the end of the season.
