Beech Wood Specs - Hardwood

European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a light-colored hardwood with a fine, even texture and subtle grain changes. The sapwood is hard to differentiate from the heartwood and the color varies from whitish to very pale brown, sometimes with a dark red heart or darker veining. It may darken to a pale pinkish-brown with steaming, and quarter-sawn surfaces may display an attractive broad ray figure. Beech is fairly plain and consistent throughout, with only slight character. It is often used for door beads, skirtings, door veneers, furniture, cabinet work, and office building reception desks and screens.

Properties:
Beech is very suitable for steam-bending and is often used for this. It has medium stiffness and high crushing strength. Beech has a tolerable blunting of cutters and tools. For nailing and screwing pre-drilling is necessary. Beech glues easily, stains and dyes well and takes an excellent finish. It is a very good wood for turning.
Grain/Texture: Grain is straight; fine to medium uniform texture and moderate natural luster.

Workability: Overall good workability; it machines well, and glues, finishes, and turns well. Beech also responds superbly to steam-bending. However, it does have a large amount of movement in service, so movement and wood stability must be taken into account.

Pricing/Availability: European beech is widely available across Europe, and it very economically priced within its natural range.

Solid and laminated furniture such as decks, benches and chairs (including bentwood furniture), quality joinery, kitchenware, tools, tool handles and workbenches, turnery, musical instruments, toys, bobbins, domestic flooring, decorative veneers and plywood.
