German football legend Franz Beckenbauer has passed away at the age of 78. Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as both a player in 1974 and as a manager in 1990, died peacefully in the presence of his family. He had a successful career with Bayern Munich, winning numerous trophies including two Ballon d'Or awards and four titles. However, he is best known for his contributions to the German national team, particularly his role in helping West Germany win the 1974 World Cup. Beckenbauer also had brief spells with the New York Cosmos and Hamburg, and later became a manager, winning the World Cup with West Germany in 1990. He also served as the sporting director at Marseille and managed Bayern Munich, winning nine titles including one Champions League trophy. Beckenbauer had been in ill health and was unable to attend the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Tributes have poured in for the footballing great, with figures such as Gary Lineker and Stan Collymore paying their respects. The Premier League also paid tribute to Beckenbauer, describing him as one of football's greatest ever players.
