STORYLINE
Thousands of Muslim worshippers gathered near Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem''s Old City, to celebrate the first Friday in the holy month of Ramadan.
A huge congregation of worshippers could be seen praying in the great plaza in front of the mosque, home to the golden-topped Dome of the Rock shrine, which has room for as many as 300-thousand worshippers.
The Al-Aqsa mosque is part of the compound known as Haram el-Sharif to Muslims and Temple Mount to Jews.
Ramadan is the Islamic calendar''s holiest month and meant as a time of reflection, when devout Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, sex and smoking from dawn till dusk, in an effort to renew their focus on spiritual, rather than material, matters.
Special Friday prayers also took place across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas joined worshippers in the presidential compound in Ramallah.
Others joined services in Gaza City.
