On this channel, we LOVE reactive dog training because it’s so much more common than most people realize, and it’s such a difficult journey for a lot of dog owners. From experience owning a severely reactive dog, I’ve luckily come to find a few products that help me and my reactive dog to make our lives and training a bit easier.

The first thing that really improved my life as a reactive dog owner is a long leash. With a reactive dog, letting your dog off-leash can not only be scary for us, but a liability in some cases. So, by getting a long leash, you can give your reactive dog all the freedom and fun of being off-leash without the risks. Of course, reactive and aggressive are not synonyms so your dog might be amazing off-leash and not reactive at all, but in most cases, reactive dogs also chase things and bark so leashes are often a must unless you’re in the middle of nowhere.

The second thing reactive dog owners need is a sturdy harness and leash. As returning viewers know, I’m a big fan of harnesses for all dogs, but especially reactive dogs because when a dog lunges with a collar on, it can do some real damage. So, a sturdy harness is a must. A leash that’s also equally sturdy is important because you need to be able to hold your dog back in case they do lunge, and I have found that leashes with a little bit of stretch and bounce are the best because when they’re too rigid with no flexibility, it can be harder to hold your dog back.

The third thing that has helped my anxiety having a reactive dog is pepper spray or bear spray or any type of animal deterrent! With a reactive dog or to be honest any dog on a leash, it can be hard to judge how your dog will react when an off-leash dog runs up to them, but also how that off-leash dog will react towards your dog. We never want to have to use this and thankfully I’ve never had to personally, but it’s a good item to have that fits in your pocket for all walks.

Another item I love as a reactive dog owner is my fanny pack. You can get dog specific ones that have treat compartments and all those fancy things, but any type of waist bag works perfectly, mine here is from Gym Shark and it’s amazing because it fits everything I need. For reactive dogs, it’s important to always have high value rewards, whether that be treats or toys, as well as the pepper spray, your phone, maybe a muzzle if you choose, whatever, so having a bag that can carry that all with convenience is key!

Fifthly, I love a good squeeze tube. Things like peanut butter or liver paste are often a dog’s ultimate high-value reward, which we all know is important to have for reactive dogs, so having squeeze tubes at home lets you pack your own rewards! When Mochi and I do our counterconditioning training, I like to switch up the rewards to keep it fun, so I love putting Mochi’s favorite peanut butter in a squeeze tube and carrying it on our training and walks.

Sixth, a muzzle is an important item for many reactive dogs. Again, we all know not all reactive dogs are aggressive. But, a lot of them are both reactive and aggressive! So, having a muzzle is really helpful because just in case your dog does get a bit aggressive, no one gets bit or hurt badly. I’ve noticed that there’s a weird misconception and stigma around muzzles as if only really “bad” dogs wear muzzles, but that’s totally not true! A lot of dogs even wear muzzles to prevent them from eating stuff off the ground, so don’t be afraid to muzzle-train your reactive dog.
