Cynthia Erivo Cowrote New ‘Wicked: For Good’ Song That ‘Speaks to the Heart of Who Elphaba Is’
The second installment of the well-known film musical Wicked: For Good will have brand-new music that differs from the first production. "One of the new songs is really special to me because I worked on it," Cynthia Erivo said on Variety's "Award Chatter" podcast on Thursday, December 26. "The whole team was crying when we were filming it. It's a song that captures the essence of Elphaba, so I hope audiences are prepared. The Broadway musical of the same name by Stephen Schwartz served as the inspiration for Wicked, which debuted in theaters last month.
The Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North share a room at the fictional Shiz University in both series, which act as prequels to Gregory Maguire's novel, The Wizard of Oz. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth played Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda, respectively, in the original musical. Erivo, 37, and Ariana Grande stepped in to play the parts in the eagerly anticipated movie adaptation. With a more adult tone, Wicked: For Good will pick up where Part One left off. The ramifications of the characters' decisions are being examined in greater detail," Erivo told Variety.
The stakes are higher and the story is more complex. It is a metamorphosis rather than merely a continuation. While Elphie eventually becomes the iconic Ozian villain, Erivo doesn’t regard the character as “purely” bad. "Elphaba is not evil. There isn't a single good or terrible character. Erivo emphasized to the outlet that they are human, complicated, and fallible. This tale challenges us to reevaluate the labels we apply to ourselves and other people. It has to do with understanding and empathy. The world needs more of it right now.” Erivo and Grande, 31, are both nominated for Golden Globes for their Wicked roles albeit in different categories.
(Grant received recognition for Supporting Actress in a Musical/Comedy, while Erigo is vying for Leading Actress in a Musical/Comedy.) Earlier this month, Grande exclaimed, "Oh my goodness, oh my goodness," on her Instagram Story. "To receive recognition from the @goldenglobes is an honor and a shock to me. Weeping (naturally). I cannot express how much I appreciate this recognition, but it is beyond words. "Congratulations to my dear sister @cynthiaerivo and the entire Ozian family on this celebration of our work," she continued. There are no words to describe how grateful I am.
Jonathan Bailey, Marissa Bode, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage are also featured in both of Jon M. Chu's Wicked films. November 21, 2025, marks the theatrical debut of Wicked: For Good. @RLAMO
