Empusidae are a family of plant-mimic mantises consisting of 10 genera containing almost 30 species. Unlike many other praying mantis families, empusids are a monophyletic group. Ambush predators with mouthparts adapted to feeding on other insects and small animals. Most empusid species are distributed throughout Africa, but are also found in Southeast Asia and southern parts of Europe.
