The legal committee of Iraq's National Assembly is recommending
that President Clinton and former US president George Bush be
put on trial for war crimes.
The move is in response to a vote in the US Senate earlier this
month recommending that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein be tried as
a war criminal.
Bush is resented for his actions during the Gulf War while both
he and Clinton are resented for the subsequent UN policy of
sanctions against Iraq that were instigated by the US.
The recommendation came on the day that UN weapons chief Richard
Butler arrived in Iraq on his first visit since the Iraqi-UN
accord on inspections of presidential sites.
Separately UNICEF and Iraqi officials jointly opened a new water
purification system in Baghdad. The maintenance of the city's
water system has been badly hit by sanctions, leading to
disease, particularly among children.
