HOW TO PAINT A BLACK BEAR IN A MEADOW - with Suzanne Barrett Justis
In this step by step painting tutorial, I will show you how to paint a bear standing in a meadow. So this is also a simple landscape painting tutorial as well!!! This is an oil painting tutorial but the ideas can also be applied in acrylic paints as well.
00:00 Getting Started
Working on a smooth substrate and going over pallet
3:54 Roughing In
I will start out by showing you the gessoed substrate which is a 9 x 12 and the pallet of colors I will be using. I will be using a lot of gamsol and a little paint to do a rough sketch of the bear and the lines of the landscape
9:17 Laying down Paint
After the composition is roughed in, I will start blocking in the bear, starting with the darkest values. This takes some time as I am correcting along the way, inching out here, tucking in there, till I get the bears structure in correctly.
16:08 Blocking in Background
After the bear looks good, I go ahead and block in the background. I can also correct any structure problems on the bear by manipulating the background or negative space around the bear. It is this time that I work on my soft edges if applicable
27:27 Detail in Bear
Well, once my students arrive (and the party begins) I start refining the bear, and slowly add detail. I also put the trees and the flowers in the background. Notice that my trees are a similar value as the greens around them. The flowers in the background are also a bit cooler (adding yellow ochre ) and and lack detail in the background compared to the hotter ( cad yellow light) tighter flowers in the foreground. This adds depth
34:20 Wrapping it Up
This is where I start wrapping things up, refining details and cleaning up any minor mistakes.
generally use Rosemary and Company paint brushes and will include the link here for your consideration

one of the brush I used for the most was a Synthetic Shiraz pointed round or rigger, I will also leave you the link to the brush here. It is a very versatile brush, and you can see that if was able to do everything I asked of it in this painting tutorial

I also used several of the Eclipse long Filberts of various sizes, you can find them here
