Dale Earnhardt came off the heels of a major heartbreaking loss in the previous year's Daytona 500 where he cut down a tire with half a lap to go, handing the win to Derrike Cope. For 1991, once again, Dale Earnhardt was a major storyline, wondering would 1991 be the year that Earnhardt finally conquers the Great American Race.
It started off well taking the lead early in the race (and shaking his fist at somebody lol). He had some close calls with Hut Stricklin and later with Rusty Wallace. He also had to overcome a pit road penalty. Somehow, he made his way back to the lead late in the race.
After a late race restart, Earnhardt had the lead. But, Ernie Irvan just shot around him with about 4 laps to go. He was racing hard with Davey Allison with 3 laps to go when off of turn 2, Earnhardt's car got loose underneath Allison. Earnhardt spun out and collected Kyle Petty while Allison went to the infield grass. Irvan went on to win the race. Earnhardt finished 5th and, once again, would have to try again to win his first 500.
