Philip Campbell and the Magnus Vkings have created a wonderful opportunity for people to experience authentic Viking life. No attention to detail is spared at this very appropriate location just two miles from the grave of a Norwegian King, just outside historic Downpatrick Town.
The Vikings carved a pivotal role in Irish history, notably in the North and Western Scotland where they assimilated into a hybrid warrior culture, the Norse Gaels, whose maritime exploits, scholastic endeavours and sea linked kingdoms set the tone of the region for centuries of conflict and settlement. In this film, I've included some commentary from 19C writer William Sharp, a key figure in the recognition and understanding of these half Gaelic, half Norse people.
