Part One of a four-hour encounter with sperm whales near the island of Gomera in the Canary Islands on April 2, 2010. This part includes still photos of a pod of 7 sperm whales who stayed in one area long enough for us (on board a 50-foot sloop) to create enough trust with them that they would allow us into their pod. Magnificent photos of spyhopping and a very large male sperm whale on its side next to the boat, showing us his white belly.
