1998 commercial for Kodak Advantix system. Jim Gaffigan shows off the various features of the Advantix system which was Kodak's branding of APS. APS' advantages included drop-in loading and multiple image shapes including panoramic, which was experiencing a jump in popularity at the time.
35mm point and shoot cameras had been widely offered for about a decade and dominated the camera market. APS was an attempt to streamline and simplify further and correct a few of the remaining shortcomings of 35mm, which was never designed for P&S use.
APS had a few advantages, but also was more expensive to buy, more expensive to process and the breadth of cameras was low. 35mm P&S cameras improved more and more, even adding features like drop-in loading. APS cameras were able to be slightly smaller but when P&S cameras finally were miniaturized sufficiently to make this advantage of APS apparent, the dawn of digital photography was upon us and as APS was in a weaker position than 35mm to start with, it quickly exited the market.
This 30 second spot aired during the 1998 season premiere of The Simpsons.
