Democrats are increasingly struggling to connect with rural voters.
The party is winning just 34% of this demographic, according to NBC News exit polls. That’s down from the previous 42% of rural support captured in 2018.
Democrats running for reelection in areas with mainly rural populations are expected to have tough battles in 2024. Among these is Sen. Jon Tester from Montana.
“We’ve got to focus our message more on the things we’re doing for rural America," said Tester on Meet The Press. "The infrastructure package is a prime example. It’s going to help rural America big time when it comes to broadband and electrical distribution and roads and bridges. We didn’t talk about it from a rural perspective.”
Only 33% of rural voters supported President Joe Biden in 2020, according to the Pew Research Center. But this year, not all Democrats struck out with the group.
In 2022, Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor-elect Josh Shapiro outperformed Biden by 15 points in rural communities. On the flip side, some like Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock performed worse than the president with rural voters.
