Voting for 45 assembly seats began in West Bengal on Saturday under Phase 5 of the assembly election during which voters will seal fate of 342 candidates. These 45 seats are spread across districts like North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, Nadia, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The phase 5 polling comes at a time when India and West Bengal both are seeing a rapid surge in Covid-19 cases. On Friday, India saw its highest single-day spike recording over 2.7 lakh Covid-19 cases. West Bengal too breached its previous daily record, reporting 6,910 Covid-19 cases and 26 deaths.
