This is frustrating for thyroid patients because they often don’t realize their thyroid medication dose will need to change throughout their life. Here's why:
When you start taking thyroid medication it shuts down the normal production of thyroid hormone from your own gland. This isn't a problem because your thyroid gland wasn't producing enough to begin with, but this does mean that thyroid hormone regulation changes when you take thyroid medication. It goes from being primarily regulated by a dynamic system (your thyroid gland) to a single dose of thyroid medication which is static.
And, unfortunately, thyroid hormone demand is not static. It changes based on your age, your body weight, hormonal factors, whether or not you are sick, your medical conditions, and so on. So no matter what, your demand for thyroid medication and thyroid hormone will change throughout your life. But when you take a thyroid medication, you lose the dynamic ability that your own thyroid gland has which means you must alter your thyroid medication dose to account for these changes.
For this reason, your dose of thyroid medication will never be constant and will always be changing throughout your life.
