Cyrus Khambatta and Robby Barbaro of Mastering Diabetes get some insights from Dr. Neal Barnard of PCRM. Dr. Barnard has done some observations on people who mostly eat plant-based diets. He's also done some tests on people with type 2 diabetes who eat a low-fat vegan diet. And what they've seen is life-changing.
A quick review. Within clusters of cells in the pancreas are beta cells that produce and release insulin. And the main role of insulin is to control blood sugar/glucose levels in the body. For people living with diabetes the insulin situation can be devastating. If you have type 1 the pancreas stops producing insulin. If you have type 2 the pancreases doesn't produce enough insulin. But thanks to a low-fat whole-food plant-based diet reversing insulin resistance is doable. No matter the type of diabetes someone has.
But how exactly a plant-based diet improves beta-cell function and insulin resistance? Dr. Barnard may have the answers. He also hopes for a future study to happen that will benefit many people with type 1 diabetes.
Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, is an adjunct professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients.
