Learning to play guitar encompasses a lot of things. You’ll want to learn chords, scales, dynamics, playing licks and solos, and how to find your way around the neck of the guitar without having to think about it. If you play guitar long enough, particularly if you’re the creative type, you will probably want to try your hand at writing a song of your own. Robert uses this lesson to give you some pointers on taking a simple idea and turning it into something you can call a song. Guitar songs are like any other song. Still, writing on guitar very often produces a different type of song than you might get if you wrote on a piano. Like all songs, however, songs written with a guitar use melody, harmony, and rhythm. Here Robert takes a basic chord and applies a nice picking pattern, then he shows you how to apply subtle variations to the theme that allow you to structure an introduction, verse, or bridge for what will eventually become a song. While songwriting is a very personal endeavor, approached in many different ways, Robert’s method here leaves a lot of room for you to experiment with your creativity. He keeps it simple and shows you how to develop a simple idea into something with substance and structure. This lesson for songwriting on guitar can be used in conjunction with some of Robert’s other acoustic guitar lessons (his lessons on fills, strumming, and chord inversions are all good) and will help guide you to writing some great guitar songs. Some of these essential techniques are touched on here as well. Start with the pattern Robert demonstrates here, then apply it to some of your favorite chord progressions to see what you can come up with. You’ll be writing hits in no time.
