This short film explains why, if you’re in Malacca, it might be a better idea to take the popular river cruise in the evening rather than the daytime.
And well, if you’ve got the time, then you do both. Because this Malacca River cruise is one of the prime tourist activities that I’ve experienced in my 20 years travel around the world. It’s fantastic.
The daytime boat ride is fun for sure - as you get to see skilled watercolor artists taking advantage of famous churches and beautifully restored buildings. This scene feels like it’s been lifted straight out of a romantic novel.
There is no shortage of things to see and do at the riverside.
You can stroll along with your partner and take in the expansive wall murals and visual storytelling that depict various eras
Despite the area’s long maritime history, the township today is well preserved and has a great vibe and a proud mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian residents offering fun and food.
At night-time, you’ll experience the bars and the music but when you’re on the water at night, well it all comes to life with a delightful colored light show.
We had a Lightning show in the sky as well, because it was about to Pour down rain, so we got some extra sound effects with thunder and lightning strikes.
The trip itself covers 9 km up and back. The website says its a 45 minutes round trip, but for me. it was 15 minutes up and 15 minutes back.
The adult ticket price is 30 ringgit which is not expensive at 6 Euros or 6 US dollars and you can book online or in person at the Jetty itself.
The service is open from 9 am till very late at 11:30 in the evening 7 days a week.
But what gives this activity extra importance is that The Malacca River and the Malacca straits is central to the whole vast history of Malaysia and in fact, the whole of South East Asia.
The town itself has been colonized by the Portuguese and the Dutch and the English and even the Japanese had a go at it.
The river is central to the story, so it’s wise to get your camera ready and sit at the front of the boat and soak up some of the well preserved and artistically beautiful scenery and many bridges.
The water is clean and there has been some serious work done to protect and prevent the boats from damaging the shoreline.
Onboard there is a voice-over in English, and Malay explaining about this and that - but it’s hard to hear with the all the other sounds going on.
If you want to experience more, then there is a full length 30 minute version of this entire trip up and back on the water at night right here at the Asia Focus YouTube channel.
When you get back to land at the end of the journey, you are offered to purchase a photo.
