Words for the broken.
This is Psalm 51:1-8 set to “New City Fellowship,” James Ward’s beautiful tune originally written for the hymn “Rock of Ages.” This psalm is dear to my heart because the Lord used it in a pivotal moment in my teenage years. A pattern of sin and lies had caught up with me, and I was being crushed under the weight of what I had done. My mom sat with me and walked me through this psalm, and I remember the weight lifting as the words “Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” hit home. Jesus came to die for sinners like me. Whatever you have done, know that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
I have loved this tune since I sang it with Geneva College’s New Song years ago, and I was delighted to find that these words from The Book of Psalms for Worship fit the tune so well. Many thanks to James Ward for his permission to post my own four-part setting of his tune here.
