On Tuesday the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled against Belize in a claim brought against Trinidad and Tobago over brown sugar. Belize alleged that Trinidad and Tobago had breached provisions under the revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, in that Trinidad and Tobago allowed for the importation of extra-regional brown sugar from Guatemala and Honduras without applying the 40% Common External Tariff (CET). CCJ found that Belize failed to provide sufficient evidence, dismissing the original application. Communications and Government Affairs Officer at BSI/ASR William Neal told Love News how important this case was.
Though Belize asked the court for appropriately worded judicial statements of the importance of implementation and maintenance of the CET on extra-regional brown sugar, in substitution of the relief claimed.
