This building is on a flat, raised area that Muslims call "al-Ḥaram al-Sharīf or The Noble Sanctuary. For Jewish people, it's known as the Temple Mount, where the Temple of Jerusalem used to be. It's a place that holds deep meaning for both Muslims and Jews.
According to Muslims, the rock under the dome is very special. They believe it's the exact spot where Prophet Muhammad went up to heaven to meet God. This important event is called the Miʿrāj. Nearby, on the southern part of the raised area, there is another mosque called Al-Aqṣā. Muslims believe the Prophet was taken there miraculously from Mecca one night (an event
known as Isrāʾ).
