To grow bananas, zone 8 is not where you want to be because a banana tree cannot tolerate freezing temperatures, but I still grow banana plants for fruit all the way in North Carolina! I do it by protecting each banana plant with straw wrapped in garden fence, and my bananas often survive!
However, some pseudostems rot in our cold, damp winters. Now that it is spring, we must remove the dead growth and prune banana plants. This video teaches you all about pruning bananas after a cold winter so you can be growing banana trees for fresh fruit. The only problem: rotting banana stems are the worst garden smell I've come across, but you must do it to overwinter bananas in cold climates like mine. It's worth it!
